Dr. Derek Mahony and the team at Full Face Orthodontics, are proud to be the original certified clinic for MSE in Australia, and have completed hundreds of successful expansions, in both adults and children.
There has been lots of interest in MSE and adult palatal expansion in recent years, and understandably so - the results from this non-invasive technique have been life changing. So we are answering some common questions about MSE, and specifically adult palatal expansion, for anyone interested in learning more.
What is MSE expansion?
MSE, or Maxillary Skeletal Expansion, developed by Dr Won Moon, gives certified dental professionals a non-invasive technique for expansion of the palate (the roof of the mouth).
What is MSE expansion used to treat?
In addition to correcting a narrow palate, MSE expands the nasal vault, so that expansion can naturally correct breathing, breathing related sleep issues and snoring. MSE will also aesthetically improve the smile to a bigger, fuller smile.
How is an MSE device fitted?
Under local anesthetic, screws are fitted to connect the device to either side of the midline suture in the palate. Each side will also be fitted to a molar. Once removed, the screw holes heal very quickly.
How does MSE expansion work?
Once fitted, the patient will use a key to turn the device, at home, slowly opening and expanding the midline suture of the palate. Your orthodontist will let you know how often to turn the key, and over what period of time, based on your unique treatment plan.
Does MSE expansion hurt?
Patients describe feeling pressure when turning the device, not pain.
How long does MSE expansion take?
Depending on your particular case, the expansion phase can take from 3 to 6 months. The device will then be left in place for an extra 3 months, to allow the expansion to settle, and new bone to form. After the expansion phase, you will begin the orthodontic treatment. Again, the time spent in braces, after expansion, will depend on your particular case.
What will happen to the gap between my teeth after MSE?
The teeth will begin to naturally come together without losing expansion. The rest will be corrected orthodontically.
Will I always need braces if I have MSE expansion?
Yes. Expansion is phase one of the treatment. Braces are then used to align the teeth and correct the bite.
Are there any negative side effects of MSE?
During the process of expansion, patients may experience some temporary jaw discomfort, a misaligned bite, or asymmetry. These will be corrected in the orthodontic phase. Trust the process! The benefits of correction far outweigh the minor things that may come up during treatment.
What will happen to my lower jaw if my upper jaw is expanded?
The lower jaw and the bite will be corrected with orthodontics, to meet the palatal expansion.
